Peace on Earth Part 1
World Peace. Peace on Earth. These phrases have been expressed in movies, books, songs, speeches, and in various religious books. I recall watching Miss Congeniality and laughing when the main character was asked, “What is the one most important thing our society needs” and answered, “Harsher punishment for parole violators.” She quickly realized her answer was not what the audience was expecting, then quickly answered “World Peace,” repeating what every other contestant before her answered.
Peace on Earth is the concept of having an ideal state of happiness, freedom, friendship, and harmony; the absence of hostility and peace among all people and nations on planet Earth. The more I’ve read about “Peace on Earth” from the Bible, the more I find how peace is tied in with division, and the end of times. In Revelation 6:4, during the vision, a rider on the horse was given the power to take peace from the earth, and to make men slay each other. In Psalm 34:14, David advises us to “depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.” However, it continues in verses 16, the face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth. In the book of Matthew 10:34-36, The Lord proclaims, “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth, I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn “a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter in law against her mother in law- a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.
Through further reading and studying these messages the Lord has left us, I learned that this “disorderly peace” are warnings of what is to come. In Matthew, Jesus was speaking to his disciples and preparing them for the life they chose when they decided to follow him. By believing in Christ, this would turn family members against each other due to their differing beliefs. The book of Psalms was written with the wisdom that to inherit the kingdom of God, we must seek peace and due good, for those that do not will not be welcome in God’s kingdom. Revelation is a beautiful book of prophecy that warns us of what is to come. The end of time is not going to be a rainbows and sunshine moment. The earth will be shaken and cleansed.
Jesus Christ came to Earth not only to bring “Peace on Earth,” but to wake us up and warn us that the time for his return is soon. During this holiday season, dive into his word, carry the spirit of the holidays not only during this time, but always for we know not the day or the hour of his soon return.
